This workshop is for anyone looking to move from lead climbing indoors to sport climbing outdoors.
Lead climbing is a partnership, you don’t need to be leading yourself just aiming to climb with those who do. The beauty of sport climbing is you can climb easily with people of very different skill levels.
There are some key differences when you go out on real rock, we’ll cover all these as well as lots of gentle practice and take the time to ease any nerves.
You need to be a competent lead belayer to attend this course, usually this means you may have done an indoor lead course.
There is no requirement to lead during the course, all the skills can be practiced and simulated with a rope above you.
Topics covered:
Types of bolts, how to spot bad ones, who puts them in? and who checks them?
Crag hazards, kit needed and etiquette.
Safe leading, clipping height, foot behind rope, ledges, lead falling skills.
Revisit of belaying, personal checks, why a knot in the end of the rope?
And the one everybody worries about - how to rethread a lower off, practiced on the ground or at the top with supervision if you’re nervous.
